Rugs provide us with comfort and aesthetic pleasure. We love them for the good looks and how soft they feel when we step out of bed in the morning. Some rugs, however, are much more than that. They are a true masterpiece that captures our minds. Artisans who came up with these rugs deserve a medal! Just look at this collection of unique rugs, aren’t they cool?
#1 Virgin (2016) by Faig Ahmed
This one is my favorite!
This handmade woolen rug can be spotted in the Chrysler Museum of Art as part of the Modern and Contemporary collection. The rug has a traditional floral design in the traditional Azerbaijani style and has a geometric border in the upper part.
Creator of the rug, Faig Ahmed is a genius artist from Baku, Azerbaijan. He is well-known for his conceptual creations that incorporate traditional ornamental arts with the symbolic imagery of Azerbaijani carpets.
Virgin rug looks unfinished at the bottom, leaving the rest to our imagination. It’s impressive how Ahmed’s rugs are produced. First, he develops the patterns and the designs with computer graphics, and then local artisans create them in textile in a traditional centuries-old technique. Dyes sheep’s wool is used in the process. The name of the rug refers to the sheep’s wool and a dowry rug, so it is a part of a cultural metaphor.
#2 3D Vortex Optical Illusion Rug
Warning – this one can make you dizzy! Made in black and white, this cool rug creates a feeling like you’re standing on the edge of a deep hole. It’s very affordable and available on Amazon, so you can get one for your home and have lots of fun!
Conveniently, it has a non-slip backing which helps the rug to stay in place when you’re walking over. Plus, it’s very easy to clean.
#3 Wavy by Pieces
This rainbow-colored rug will brighten any day. Radiating warmth and comfort, this wool and cotton rug is made in India. It is hand-dyed and hand-tufted. Materials are extra quality – New Zealand wool is hand-tufted onto the cotton woven backing. It looks perfect in spacious interiors, and the recommended size is 9’x12’, so the colors and the pattern are fully open in the room.
This artistic rug was first exhibited in Pieces Homes Project and is now available online in standard and custom colors.
#4 Santa Cruz River by Alexandra Kehayoglou
Have you ever met a rug you want to spend your holidays on? Well, this one by Alexandra Kehayoglou takes us to the charming landscape of the Argentinian Santa Cruz river. The rug is hand-tufted and made of wool. As beautiful as it is, no wonder that museums started showing their interest. It’s now available for viewing in the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne. You can see the rug, touch it and even lay down for a nap on the picturesque river banks. I say, the trip is worth it!
#5 After Matisse Rug by Sonya Winner
Henri Matisse’s famous paper cutouts are the inspiration for the After Matisse colorful area rug. This sculptural area rug is the work of artisan weavers who hand-weaved it. GoodWeave artisan weavers hand-tuft the After Matisse rug using the New Zealand wool. This washable, hard-wearing rug may also be used as a wall hanging.
Sonya made the After Matisse rug out of a collage of interlocking squares of color. The 25 tones of natural wool resemble the look of transparent colors blending together.
#6 Woody Wood rug by Yvette Laduk
The rug created by the Dutch artist will enrich any interior. It’s a soft reminder of how charming nature is. I believe it would look most appealing in the cabin, but to be honest, it will fit any space, even a modern one. The company YLdesign, which has its headquarters in the Netherlands, designed and manufactured this rug. Woody Wood looks like a huge slice of the transverse section of a tree trunk and is made of sustainable materials.
#7 3D Forest Floor by TwopinsStore
If nature is your thing, you will definitely like this one. A 3D hand-tufted rug is the most gorgeous thing you can buy for the floors. It is cool, crazy and so soft to touch! No wonder that animals love it too. Materials used include bamboo, silk, and wool. The rug is unusual but pretty universal – you can place it in the living room, bedroom, nursery – anywhere you need to have a piece of nature.
#8 Blanket Statement by Lise Lefebvre
Created by Lisa Lefebvre, the Blanket Statement is a recycled rug project that’s both ecologically responsible and environmentally conscientious because it avoids the use of real bears. I think it makes the rug even cooler!
The designer’s goal is to give a modern touch to classic rug patterns by repurposing worn-out carpets, comforters, mats, and sheets that are both physically and stylistically outmoded. The bear has been given a new lease of life, woven together into something new and exciting.
#9 Tom and Jerry Rug
The Tom and Jerry rug is based on the classic Tom and Jerry cartoon. It’s so cool that even adults will love it! It is available online in two sizes and is hand-tufted. When used as a stairwell rug or as a floor rug, this rug will have everyone giggling. It is available in two sizes. What I don’t understand is how they came up with the idea to create a rug out of this picture, but it is absolutely wonderful!
It’s a flat rug that, when put on an incline, allows you to recreate Tom being flattened on a stairwell as shown in one of the episodes in which he was, well, flattened on a stairwell.
Not all rugs can “graciously” stay put on a stairwell, therefore we have to give credit to the designer for accomplishing this brilliance.
#10 Orb by Milla Novo and Moooi carpets
An ‘Orb’ line of rugs is designed by Milla Novo and Moooi carpets. Incorporating Milla Novos’ trademark knotting method and metallic ropes, they are inspired by the shapes seen in the indigenous Mapuche heritage of South America and incorporate them into their designs. The sphere has an otherworldly, mystical quality to it, and it is brimming with wonderful energy.
These artistic rugs look so magical, you can almost hear them speaking. This beauty is something I’d definitely love to have at home!
#11 Clouds by Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec
A new typology designed by the brothers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec represents an advance in the field of interior design. This is not a 100% rug but can be used as one if you place it on the walls or on the floor for decoration purposes. These rugs are constructor-like, you can change their shape and combine different colors. They can also serve as a room-dividing system. Clouds are made out of cloth pieces that are tied together with elastic bands to form free-standing or hanging constructions that also have soundproofing qualities.
#12 Legs by Seletti
A modern Rug “Legs” by Italian brand Seletti is a bright and eccentric rug that makes a statement. Most suitable for the modern interiors, the rug has a very vivid color palette, with dominating blue and red colors, which represent male and female forces that attract. To me, it looks like a Yin and Yang in a modern interpretation.
There are many more rugs in the Seletti collection that provide attraction to the eye. The company concentrates on design projects as well as on the creative brilliance that is characteristic of Italy.
